The Sinking of the Lusitania and U-Boat Attacks
In May of 1915, the RMS Lusitania was attacked and sunk with torpedoes by the German U-20. This event caused widespread outrage due to the violation of the perceived safe passage for civilian ships. While the Germans claimed the ship carried ammunition, this was not confirmed until decades later, and was not reported on by the British media. Instead, the British media and propaganda focused on the staggering death toll of the sinking and the stealthy dishonest warfare that the Germans used.
